The Everson’s upcoming exhibition, From Here to There: Alec Soth’s America celebrates the voice of the individual.
This remarkable survey of photographs coincides with the first ever VOICES event, presented by Hiscock Legal Aid Society and Everson Museum of Art on October 6, 2011.
Soth is well known for his striking portraits made over the past 15 years, many of which will be featured in the exhibition.
The presentation will also include Broken Manual, a new body of work Soth has been developing since 2006, which explores places of escape in America and individuals who seek to flee civilization for a life off the grid.
“VOICES is a unique collaborative fundraising and awareness building event that builds on each organizations singular mission: providing a platform for finding one’s voice,” said Steven Kern, Everson Museum of Art Executive Director. “While attending Voices, guests will be inspired by the storytelling Soth accomplishes in his work.”
“Stories are so satisfying…” Soth said in an interview with Aaron Schuman for Seesaw Magazine. “…I long for stories. Novels and movies satisfy, but photographs often leave me feeling like something’s missing. I’m trying to work on this.”
From Here to There, explores over 15 years of Soth’s career, and includes an extensive new body of work. The exhibition provides a focused look at an extraordinary photographer whose compelling images of the American road and its unexpected turns form powerful narrative vignettes.
Since his inclusion in the 2004 Whitney and Sao Paulo biennials, Soth’s reputation as one of the most interesting voices in contemporary photography has continued to grow.
“While he’s followed the path of photographers before him, like Robert Frank, Soth’s is a distinct perspective,” said Debora Ryan, Everson Museum of Art senior curator. “The wandering searching and process of telling is as profound as the recording of such encounters. Considering his pictures together, it probes the individualities of the people, places and objects depicted, forming a picture of an unexpected America.”
VOICES offers an opportunity for guests to support two organizations that encourage and promote expression. Admission is $125 per person. Reservations are required.
From Here to There: Alec Soth’s America will be on display at the Everson Museum of Art October 1, 2011 – January 12, 2012. Tickets and more information to Voices are available by calling (315) 474-6064 or at www.everson.org/visit/tickets.php
